The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recently began implementing changes to the traffic point system in order to more harshly penalize reckless driving. As of February 16, all drivers in New York State will be subjected to those new standards, potentially putting them at a higher risk of enhanced penalties. This makes it even more important for drivers to have legal representation if they are ticketed for traffic violations.

New Traffic Regulations Make Ticket Penalties Harsher

The newly published regulations, which were originally proposed back in 2023, make things significantly more difficult for motorists who receive tickets for traffic offenses. These changes include:

  • Drivers will have their license after accruing ten points on their license, rather than eleven.

  • The period for points remaining on a license is extended from 18 months to 24 months.

  • More offenses will have points attached to them, particularly drug and alcohol related offenses.

  • Some existing offenses have had the number of points increased, such as speeding in a construction zone or leaving the scene of a crash.

Potential Consequences for Motorists

While these regulations are intended to make the roads safer, they can also make things far more costly for motorists who get ticketed. Not only are they at a higher risk of losing their license, they are more likely to deal with issues such as a Driver Responsibility Assessment and associated fees. This can make even a relatively simple ticket into an expensive problem that can significantly impact your ability to work and handle daily chores.

What You Should Do
